Influenza On Campus
Medical Director Scott Ripple described this year’s influenza outbreak as typical for this time of year. He explained that normal increase in flu cases can be attributed to the end of Winter Term. Different strains of the virus are brought back by students from their various Winter Term locations. Students’ close living quarters also contribute to the problem. The virus is spread through respiratory droplets which make residential buildings a key target for the spread of the virus.
He advised that students take advantage of the free flu shots provided by the Wellness Center. These are given at the start of the second semester and are often underused by the student population. However he was optimistic that the number of cases should start decreasing soon.
